Seeing a small chip or crack on your windshield is not just unpleasant to the eye, it can also compromise the integrity of the glass. Next thing you know, that small crack has now covered your line of view and you’ll be on the phone booking a schedule at your trusted windshield repair center.
However, not all windshield damages are repairable. This is why we, at Imperium Auto Glass, are here to help you discern if your windshield can be repaired or is already in need of replacement.
Size of the Chip or Crack
Even with the newest technology, the National Windshield Repair Association has limited repairs for chips of up to three inches and cracks of up to fourteen inches. However, keep in mind that larger chips require extensive work and can still leave structural damage even after repairs. We would recommend repair only for chips smaller than a quarter and cracks up to three inches long.
Depth of the Damage
Windshields consist of three layers: outer glass, inner plastic, and inner glass. If a crack or chip manages to penetrate all three layers, we’re afraid that your windshield is beyond repair.
Location of the Damage
Windshield damages that cannot be repaired include:
- Chips or cracks that cover a wide area of the windshield as it significantly compromises the integrity of the glass
- Chips or cracks that obstruct the driver’s line of view
- Damages that affect sensors such as rain sensors, lane departure warning systems, automated driver systems, etc.
When to Seek Windshield Replacement Services
These are the three main things you would want to consider before seeking to replace your windshield:
- Your windshield glass is not laminated
- The damage on your windshield spans more than three inches
- The crack or chip penetrates through all three layers of the glass
